Sri Lankan involvement in IYA2009 – National Node

The IYA2009 activities will take place locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. National Nodes in each country have been formed to prepare activities for 2009. These Nodes establish collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers, science centers and science communicators in preparing activities for 2009. More than 90 countries are already involved, with well over 140 expected.

Sri Lanka Astronomical Association (SLAA) will act as the National Node while Prof. Kavan Ratnatunga serves as the National Node Chairman for IYA2009 - International Astronomical Union. In this great task we hope to bring following places/people together to make this project a success.

Sri Lanka Astronomical Association
Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technology (ACCIMT)

Astronomy & Space Study Center (ASSC)
Planetarium – Colombo

University of Moratuwa
University of Colombo

National Committee of IYA2009

The IAU will serve as a catalyst and coordinator for IYA2009. Each country participating in IYA2009 will have a national organizing committee, a so-called National Node, with a Chair. It is essential for efficient coordination and sharing of information that each national committee identifies a single point of contact that will serve as the link between the IAU and the National Node.

SLAA has appointed a National Committee for IYA2009 which consist of a chairman, secretary, and committee members. Committee members are selected as two volunteers from each above mentioned places.

IYA2009 SRI LANKA

International Year of Astronomy 2009

The vision of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery. All humans should realize the impact of astronomy and basic sciences on our daily lives, and understand better how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society.

The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover". IYA2009 events and activities will promote a greater appreciation of the inspirational aspects of astronomy that embody an invaluable shared resource for all nations.

The IYA2009 activities will take place at the global and regional levels, and especially at the national and local levels. National Nodes in each country have been formed to prepare activities for 2009. These Nodes establish collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers, science centres, educators, and science communicators.
